Best Wife and Pappy 12 left Massachusetts and entered Vermont. We readily admit we are intimidated by Vermont. We are now in serious hiking territory. The difficulty and corresponding beauty ahead will both be exhilarating. Everything only gets better in New England.
On Sunday after a wonderful church service in Bennington, VT we were hiking to the top of Mt Greylock when we saw the couple in the first photo hiking toward us. They asked if we are thru hikers. Yes. Would we like some ice cream? You mean right here right now or do we have to go somewhere to get it? Right now. It is in our backpacks in dry ice. Whoa. Never in a million years would I expect someone to walk the AT packing ice cream for thru hikers. Of course it was the best ice cream ever. Later that night a couple at the lodge on top of Greylock gave us some cut watermelon. Blessings are falling all around.
Moldering privy rules are common. They usually say don't put trash in the privy and other common instructions. I like the way the instructions below describe what can be placed in the privy.
Yesterday, all day yesterday, we saw dozens of the most tiny frogs we've ever seen like the one in the palm of my hand below. They were everywhere. I have no idea why we saw them only the one day.
Been passing more and more ponds. Every one is beautiful. Many are beaver ponds. Picture below shows one beaver dam.
Caught a shuttle to town for a shower and food resupply. The AT guide book said that a motel owner offered free pick up at the trail head. Two hikers our age, Best Wife, and I were waiting for the free shuttle. When the guy showed up in a small pickup truck instead of a car, those two guys were ticked. I was loving it. As we were climbing in two more hikers took advantage and jumped in too. Best Wife misses out on all the fun when she opts for the cab.
