Can't believe we have hiked 44 miles in GA already. It's flying by. Since we had a 16 mile day on Monday we rewarded ourselves with an eight mile day on Tuesday including a stay in a $72 cabin at a road crossing. Not sure which felt better, the hot shower or the cabin host doing our laundry. I'll take both any day.
Big bonus for best Wife and Pappy 12, our son-in-law Beau Parks drove down to GA with us so we could hike with him. In 2012 he hiked all but a couple hundred miles of the AT and is finishing up those miles with us. He is teaching us lots about efficiency in the hike, like taking 30 min instead of 90 min lunch breaks. This morning we were on the trail by 7:15. Never done that before. Love these miles with Beau.
Views in northern GA are absolutely amazing. In MD, PA, NJ and NY we saw some good views but they are nothing like down here. Part of the reason is in PA the difference in elevation from summit to valley might be 1500 feet. In GA and NC it's up to 3000 feet and mountain after mountain as far as you can see. Truly breathtaking. Some might say literally breathtaking but it's not. We are still able to breath while gazing at the views.
Hope you don't get tired of tree pictures because this guy went down but didn't give up. His branched turned into tree trunks themselves and started the growing process all over again.
Check out the daylight under the boulder balanced on his buddy. Looks like it wouldn't take much of a pry bar to topple the whole thing. Somebody tell me how in the world this boulder ended up balanced like this in the first place.
Might be hard to tell what all those things are hanging from the tree limbs on a tree outside a backpacking outfitter store. Well, this store is right on the trail only 31 miles from Springer Mountain, the southern end of the AT. Every year hundreds of inexperienced hikers arrive at this outfitter and either quit or at least buy new good hiking boots. Discarded ones go up in the tree. Quite the sight.
Right outside the store is the actual Sasquatch. They had him bronzed so he couldn't run away.
Lastly, small flowers are big time beautiful. God's creation is magnificent
