From March 20 to April 29, Best Wife and Pappy 12 completed the first segment of the hike: 400 miles on the AT from Harpers Ferry to NY. Starting May 7 Segment #2 will be GA to Harpers Ferry and Segment #3 will finish it up from NY to Baxter State Park in Maine.
This plan is working nicely so far. While a large majority of thru hikers were beginning their trek in GA, we really enjoyed hiking MD, PA, NJ, and NY among few other hikers. Rocky, boring PA is complete, starting out close to home couldn't have been better, and unlike summer months, water in PA and NJ was plentiful.
Now, on the one hand we are enjoying the excitement all over again of "starting" our hike in GA. But on the other hand we also know that when we hit VA we will leapfrog up to NY. Good feeling.
After 400 miles of NY beaver dams, water falls and five trunk trees, the best shelter so far and a grandson who traveled from Boston to make the 400 mile sign (he had to have it underlined) we hopped a train in Poughkeepsie, NY for a ride to Penn Station. Then a Bolt Bus to DC. We are now traveling to Springer Mt, GA to begin the 1000 mile second segment.
